We went straight to the Cango Caves (9.30) and were told that tours were fully booked until 13.00. Well with a bit of gentle persuasion we got on the 10am tour. We spoke to guy from England and he had been trying to get on a tour for two days!! It was as impressive as we remembered from 30 odd years ago. It was interesting to see that there were a lot of tourists from India and of course the usual Germans.
We drove the winding route through the mountains along the river from the Cango Caves to De Rust which had beautiful scenery. They farm olives and onions mainly, as well as wheat and sheep.
We stopped at a lovely farm stall along the way selling everything from Karoo lamb, Game biltong, furniture, gifts, you name it. The farmer said his wife makes more money in the shop than he does farming!
We managed to get a booking in Karoo National Park. We did an afternoon drive and saw mountain and burchells zebra, gemsbok, kudu, klipspringer, loads of tortoises and hartebeest. Very mountainous and rugged country with rocks everywhere - quite different to what we have seen the last week or so.
Sitting back in camp enjoying the sunset and loving the variety of birds that are hopping around us.
