14 Sept - Kgakagadi

Had a long slow drive today and didn't see much to write home about other than a lot more Gemsbok (Oryx).
We have never seen so many Tawny Eagles, Marshall Eagles, Jackal Buzzards and Goshawks..so definitely a good bird day.
Saw flocks of Nanaqua Doves and an interesting fact is that the male gathers the materials and she builds the nest..obviously doesn't trust his design!
My favorite is the Namaqua Sandgrouse. It is pretty and can fly at 60kms an hour. The male has special feathers in order to carry water back to the chicks.
Cannot get over how many Four Striped Grass mice there are amusing us crossing the road. Even found one climbing a shrub to eat the new leaves.
We have come to realize that Kgalagadi is more about solitude and the outback rather than an abundance of game. Due to it being an arid park there are obviously no Elephant, Buffalo, Rhino or Hippo. Have not seen any Warthog, Baboons nore Monkeys.

The grass is always greener on the other side..We broke our backs to get in at Nossop camp and really it is nothing special up in this area of the Park. Met a couple who have booked in here for a week..The wife is not impressed!! The good news is that they are doing renovations and enlarging the facilities in the camp.
We are camped right on the fence so hope to hear some animal sounds tonight. (R72pp).

Basil has found a Yellow Mongoose to befriend!ll
At 5 pm the temp was 37% but was bearable. All the animals were under the trees in the shade, even the Ostriches!
Would hate to be here in Summer.

Took our coffee down to the hide and sat in the brightest moon light. It was stunning but only saw one lone Jackal.
