The main dirt roads in Namibia are normally as smooth as tar. Drove for ever through the base of beautiful barren mountains, wonderful rock formations and then some areas are flat and barren as far as you can see.
Popped in at Ai-Ais which they have renovated.R40mi..(I am not sure on what..obviously not the signs for the garage!) We did not swim in the hot springs as it was in need of cleaning. Enjoyed an ice cream as it was 38 deg.
Almost changed plans again, as we met Brent last night and he is the main guy in charge of the Richtersveld Park. (Mountain Desert). His team are starting a new campsite on the Orange river and told us we were welcome to go and stay there. It is all gearing towards the Desert Knights event..It is a multi-day mnt.bike and canoeing event starting at night and riding in moon light. It meanders in and out of SA and Namibia,(Richtersveld Trans-Fronteir Park) along the Orange. When we reached the camp, it was early so we decided to push on and get into the Park.
We came across Sam Nojomo's (sp) 1st President of Namibia's vineyards from where table grapes are exported. To cross back into the SA part of the Richtersveld one has to cross over on a ferry and then go through border control.
We finally got going at about 3.30 pm and had a 3hr (+-45kms ) drive along the most shocking track over rocks and some sand. Unfortunately people are starting to make their own roads as the existing are so bad. It will end up like Moremi (Botswana)..so many roads you don't know when you are on the right track.
We finally got to De Hoop camp where we have camped before, when there were only 2 other campers. This time there must have been about 20 campers so it looses its feel of the wild. We drove another 8kms, on an even worse road to get to Richtersberg camp. Fortunately there was only one other camper and we are right on the river bank. Had a horrible dust storm in the evening.
